Odd Couple: Shrimp goby and blind shrimp

Spotted Shrimp goby – Amblyeleotris guttata, Shot in Dauin, Philippines.

These shrimp goby live in a symbiotic relationship with shrimps(they sharing same burrow). The shrimps are almost blind and need the goby to keep an eye out for predators. Shrimp goby needs a hiding place and benefits from living in the burrow excavated by the shrimp.

Snapping (Blind) shrimp – Alpheus sp., Shot in Dauin, Philippines.

I’m sure many people already know about relationship this shrimp and goby.
But I’m still very curious to know how they actually decide to pair up in the first place?

Bali May 2012

I just returned from the trip to Bali, Indonesia.
This trip was underwater video shooting for TV documentary about artificial reef, Bio-Rock project at Taman Sari Resort, Pemuteran in Bali, Indonesia. Additionally, we made some footage at Tulamben and Nusa Penida island.

In front of Taman Sari resort, you can find more then 60 Bio-Rock structure and reef was amazingly healthy even in high water temperature. We could see these healthy hard corals on electirc wired structures giving positive effects on natural coral area as well. After few days of diving at this site, I can say Bio-Rock project is Bali’s most successful attempt at reef re-generation.

Much respect and thanks to Agung Prana, Rani Morrow-Wuigk and Komang Astika and all staff at Taman Sari, support divers from Bali Diving Academy for support us to filming.

It was full time underwater video trip but I took few photos and posted some of them to this gallery : http://ejlabs.net/zenphoto/recent/Bali_2012/

Squat Lobster Feeding

Usually this small (less then cm) squat lobster (galathea sp.) is not colorful photogenic subject but very interesting to watch that how they are grabbing food & feeding in video.
Filmed in Lembeh strait, North sulawesi, Indonesia.
Canon 7D, 100mm.
