Blue ringed octopus with eggs

On a recent trip to Lembeh strait in Indonesia, I was lucky enough to see Blue ring Octopus with eggs.

Blue-ringed octopus females lay only one clutch of about 50 eggs in their lifetimes towards the end of autumn. Eggs are laid then incubated underneath the female’s arms for about six months, and during this process she does not eat. After the eggs hatch, the female dies, and the new offspring will reach maturity and be able to mate by the next year.

지난 2012년 12월에 인도네시아, 렘베에서 아주 운이 좋게도 알을 품고 있는 블루링 옥토퍼스(푸른점 문어 – Blue ringed octopus)를 촬영하였습니다.

블루링은 성체의 크기가 약 5~10cm 정도되는 매우 작은 문어로 치명적인 독을 가지고 있으며 수명이 약 2년 정도 된다고 합니다. 암놈이 평생 단 한번 50~100여개의 알을 낳아 부화될 때 까지 품고 다닙니다. 이 기간 동안에 어미는 아무것도 먹지 않고 알들을 보호하며 부화된 후에는 어미는 죽게됩니다.
