2010년 10월 9일부터 15일까지 열리는 2010 Timor-Leste Dive Photo Contest (동 티모르 다이브 포토 콘테스트)에 초대 되었습니다.
이번 콘테스트는 동티모르 대통령이 직접 주관하는 대회로 전세계 각국의 수중 사진가들 50명이 초대되며 항공, 숙식등의 비용을 동티모르에서 보조합니다. 현재까지 초대된 사진가들중에는 Debi Henshaw, Jeffrey de Guzman, Darren Jew, David Henshaw, Doug Anderson, Robert Christie, Edvin Eng, Thomas Ozanne, Mark Thomas, Soren Egeburg, Derek Haslam, Gary Brennand 같은 촬영가들이 있고 영광스럽게도 제가 함께 하게 되었습니다.

그동안 직접 만나고 같이 촬영도 해본 몇몇 사진가들도 있지만 대부분은 온라인으로만 알고 있었던 사람들이라 모두가 한자리에 모이게 된다는 것 자체가 너무나 즐거운 일이고 특정 단체나 기업이 아닌 국가가 주최하는 대회로 입상한 사진들은 동 티모르 다이빙 관광 산업 개발에 사용하게 된다니 더욱 더 의미가 있겠습니다.
개인적으로 2003년에 동티모르를 한번 방문한 적이 있었고 포르투칼의 지배, 인도네시아에서 독립의 과정에서 생긴 상처들 그리고 너무나 가난한 나라지만 천혜의 아름다운 자연을 가진 그곳에서 여러가지 감동을 받았습니다. 그때 다이빙을 하지 못해 많이 아쉬웠는데 이번에 대회라는 압박감 보다는 그저 이런 기회가 주어졌다는 것 자체에 너무나 가슴이 설레입니다.

I hope that this event will draw attention to our fantastic marine biodiversity, our tremendous potential for scuba diving and also its development as a tourism industry here in Timor-Leste.
Most importantly this initiative will help us protect our precious seas, reefs and their inhabitants for our future generations.”
